Tying on backing, line, and leader

  1. Start by attaching the backing to the spool. Use the Knot Tying Guide to select the appropriate knot. Standard 20 lb. braided Dacron backing is perferred by most anglers. (Backing fills up the spool so you can reel in line more quickly.)

  2. Next select and attach your fly line to the backing. Fly line is available in a variety of types and weighs. Select the right weight based on the size of your rod. Types of line include:

    1. Weight Forward (WF): line is thicker at the front end; good for beginners; helps get longer casts.
    2. Double Tapered (DT): line is thicker in the middle and thinner at both ends. You will not get the extra help in casting as with WF but the line can be used in either direction.
    3. Level line: like the name implies, the line is the same thickest throughout.
    4. Floating line: used for top feeding fish
    5. Sinking line: used for fish that feed below the surface

  3. Once the line is attached to the backing, tie on the tapered leader and then the fly. Now it's time to go after that Brookie!
