Models in the 1400 and 1500 series

  1. Get a tiny flathead screwdriver, preferably a magnetic one. You'll also need a paper towel or napkin
  2. Remove the spool.
  3. On the frame, see the center post encircled by a metal ring and black gear.
  4. Wipe off the grease.
  5. Remove the 2 screws holding the 2 rings in place.
  6. Remove the metal ring. Be careful to keep it face up.
  7. Remove the black gear. Turn it face down. Note the tiny black plastic pawl. It sets on a tiny spring. Don't drop this.
  8. Replace the black gear, face down and the metal ring face up. Gently jiggle the gear in place on the tiny pawl. Hold in place and tighten down the screws.
  9. Now, put the spool back in. Palm the reel in your LEFT hand. Turn the crank forward. It should be free spinning. Now turn the crank toward you. You should feel a little resistance. SUCCESS!
  10. The only thing left is to change the location of the pillars. That's it.
